Windows 7 Media Sharing Error

I recently purchased Microsoft’s Windows 7 Ultimate Edition and needed to set it up to share all of my media files (videos) to be played with my XBOX 360. So I added all of my media files (videos, music etc.) to the windows media player library and turned on the media sharing option in the “Control Panel\Network and Internet\HomeGroup” menu. Everything was perfectly working until I opened up Windows Media Center  and ran through the custom setup.

For some reason that screwed up the ownership log on of my shared media files and I wasn’t able to play maybe 20% of my files. It has to do with the Windows Media Player Network Service (WMPNetworkSvc) taking over your shared media files and making them unplayable on your XBOX 360. The following error message came up every time I tried to play a video file:

Cannot Play Video
The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

The error also came up with a meaningless error code. Anyway, do the following to fix the ownership of these files.

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Search for “administrative tools”
  3. Click on Administrative Tools
  4. Double click on the “Services” icon
  5. Scroll down and double-click on “Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service”
  6. Click on the “Log On” tab
  7. Select “Local System Account” with the check boxed un-checked. See screenshot.
  8. 8. Press “OK” on the bottom and you should be able to play those files now
